Meet The Manager

Tara Peacock is Care Home Manager at Hawkinge House.

On 28 April 2009, Shepway District Council resolved to grant detailed planning permission for the building of a new care home in 4 acres of what used to be a Battle of Britain airfield. The site sits beside a doctors’ surgery and a new housing development of 3,000 houses.

The building is three storeys and is large enough to accommodate separate units for various levels of both physical frailty and dementia. Accommodation is provided in a range of studio, one and two bed suites with on site 24 hour care, thus ensuring a home for life. Residents  have the choice over whether they wish to rent or buy on a leasehold basis.

The Care Suites provide residents with their own accommodation with front door and generous personal day space for socialising with family and friends. Communal space for socialising and dining has been incorporated and there are separate garden areas for the different groups.

Strong links with the community are being fostered with services such as social events and day care being offered within the scheme.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

We ensure that we are compliant with all Public Health England guidelines. All staff and visitors are subjected to regular testing for Covid 19. We have a robust Infection Prevention Control policy and procedure and all staff are trained in this key area.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
safe-tick Virus Testing We are testing for viral infection when symptoms present within our care setting.
Safe Visiting Space

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Description

Our care suites provide residents with much more space than nursing home bedrooms, but with the same level of nursing care and support.  At Hawkinge, some of the care suites are specially for dementia sufferers who would otherwise need to move into a traditional EMI nursing home.

As well as giving residents additional space for personal effects and mementos,  our care suites  differ from traditional nursing home bedrooms in three important ways:

    1. Social space with comfortable seats so that residents’ families and friends can spend good quality time together in privacy and comfort
    2. Dining space so that residents can enjoy their meals in their own room, if they wish.
    3. A kitchenette so that residents and their guests can prepare drinks and snacks.

Each suite has an en-suite shower room and benefits from the secure entrance to the building.

Activities Are So Important

The home has four Activity Co-ordinators who develop a programme of meaningful activities, guided by the interests of our residents. Activities can be one to one, or within a group setting and we encourage our residents to join in, whilst respecting their personal choices and preferences.  We also regularly invite singers and entertainers into the home. We have our very own village area, where our residents can visit the sweet shop, the Post Office and the pub and where they can enjoy real social time, with a bit of reminiscence to talk about the good old days.

We put together an Activities Plan, so that residents and visitors can be a part of what we offer, and can join in as they wish.

We try to get to know our residents as individuals, and we put together their Life Stories so that we can share memories with them and invoke memories that are special to them. Alongside this we have InteractiveMe where we can look at old photos, listen to favourite music and share experiences.

We are members of Oomph and we offer activities in line with their programme.
