Meet The Manager

Emma Hackett is Home Manager at Astbury Mere Care Home.

Hello, my name is Emma, and I have worked at Astbury Mere since we opened in 2010. I am a registered general nurse and that is where my career with Porthaven Care Homes began. Over the past thirteen years, I have progressed with the company, becoming deputy and home manager. I have an excellent team working alongside me, and we work as one unit to support our wonderful residents and their families, as well as each other. I am incredibly proud when people describe Astbury Mere as a 'happy home'.

Emma Hackett

Bordering the historic mill town of Congleton and the delightful village of Astbury in the heart of East Cheshire, Astbury Mere enjoys a truly enviable position. Whilst only a few minutes drive from the centre of town, the home enjoys a leafy setting adjacent to the natural open beauty of Astbury Mere Country Park. Astbury Mere is also less than 20 minutes away from Biddulph, Kidsgrove and Sandbach.

Opened in 2010, Astbury Mere provides 24 hour residential, nursing, dementia and respite care for the elderly in an elegant and spacious home incorporating numerous thoughtful and practical features which ensure Astbury Mere is able to meet the changing needs of its residents.

Our expertly trained and professional staff are dedicated to the care, comfort and dignity of all our residents, with special emphasis given to promoting independence, privacy, respect and wellbeing.

All residents benefit from living in a caring environment with generously appointed private bedrooms with en suite wetrooms, and plentiful communal living areas including sitting rooms, restaurants, a hairdressing salon, a leisure and wellness room and a private dining room for special family occasions.

In keeping with our unique and award winning leisure and wellness philosophy, our residents also benefit from our private and secure landscaped gardens for peaceful relaxation, gardening and if the weather permits, gentle exercising.

All of us at Astbury Mere are confident we are one of the leading care homes in Cheshire. We would be delighted to show you our home, and should you decide to visit us, you will see the difference Astbury Mere makes to the lives of our residents and families.

    Activities Are So Important

Our Leisure and Wellness Coordinators work closely with residents to provide a programme of leisure and wellness activity choices and events seven days a week. Home life is a priority at Porthaven, and every resident receives a person-centred approach and an individual exercise programme tailored to their needs and personal goals.

Every Porthaven home has a dedicated ‘Leisure and Wellness Room’ and a daily programme for enjoying wellness activities, including Zumba, Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, iPad sessions, music, art and pet therapies, socials and clubs, inter-home bowling matches, art history, wine tasting and casino nights – to name but a few. In some of our homes, we also have gyms with specialist equipment for older people, and cinemas or cafés, all present to enhance leisure and wellness choices.

With so many well-being activities for body and mind, we also recognise that everyone needs some time to honour their spirit with relaxation and mindfulness for personal reflection, and our unique leisure and wellness programme incorporates opportunities for this.

If you would like to find out more about our innovative and inspirational indoor activities, please call any of our homes and arrange for a visit at your convenience.

As welcoming, homely and attractive as our homes are, a key component of Porthaven’s leisure and wellness framework is the need for our residents to continue to engage with life outdoors.

Our landscaped and terraced gardens provide the perfect settings for many leisure and wellness events throughout the year, including sporting moments, musical soirees, concerts, cocktail parties and charity events. Or just sitting or strolling outside and reflecting.

One of our most important highlights every year is the Porthaven Garden Challenge taking place amongst the flower and vegetable beds, which challenges the residents and staff to compete for some amazing prizes. Our gardens turn into a riot of colour and sensory experience with some interesting produce grown, floral creations blooming, and edible treats abounding!

With a fleet of minibuses and professional drivers, our homes also offer trips and outings every week. Our outings programme is extensive, and some of the recent venues chosen by our residents have included The Wallace Collection in London, the Old Trafford Museum in Manchester and the east coast. Many of our trips though are much closer to home with visits to farmers’ markets, shops, breweries, country estates, beauty spots and not surprisingly local pubs being an evergreen and popular choice for many!
