Cornford House is a recently built care home in extensive and peaceful grounds on the outskirts of Pembury Village, near Tunbridge Wells. It provides accommodation for residents with nursing care needs and offers a choice of studio or one-bedroom care suites.
Most of the accommodation is for physically frail older people, but the home also incorporates a specialist unit to care for older people with dementia-type illnesses. Full 24-hour nursing care is available for all residents, so most residents can have a home for life within the scheme. Residents’ spouses can also be accommodated, so couples can stay together even when one develops the need for ongoing care.
Cornford House focuses on providing relationship-centred care, so a high priority is given to fostering and nurturing relationships between residents, their family and friends and the healthcare professionals who work in and visit the home.

Arrangements are in place at Cornford House Care Home to ensure the resident's healthcare needs are satisfactorily met. All residents are registered with a local General Practitioner. Once a week, a general practitioner holds a clinic at the home, where all residents with a health problem and any resident who requests to see the doctor are seen together. The doctor visits residents in their own rooms to ensure privacy. We ensure regular access to ancillary health professionals so that residents can live at optimum capacity. Opticians visit regularly, and each resident is offered an annual eye test. A regular chiropody clinic is held. We refer residents to the hospital when hearing aids are required and aids are maintained regularly. We have a referral system to the local dentist who can treat most problems in-house. District nurses provide us with support and advice for specialist wound care and palliative care. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation therapy are all available at Cornford House following a referral from the GP. We ensure that all residents attend booked hospital appointments and arrange for them to be accompanied by a carer. |

Cornford House has three Social Coordinators who coordinate an active programme of crafts, games, and hobbies, as well as regular events, social activities, and excursions. Group activities in the main lounge include weekly musical entertainment and an arts and crafts group. Some recent activities include a cooking session, a quiz, and an exercise group. Outside entertainers visit regularly. An annual visit to a farm to see the newborn lambs is always very popular. Residents’ views are sought on what type of entertainment and outings they wish to have available, and the activities programme is built on their preferences. Some residents prefer to spend time in their own rooms; it is their choice. In the dementia unit, a specific programme of activities and experiences is offered with one-to-one attention, such as reading, talking, manicures, and massages. Our Social Coordinators compile residents’ “Life Stories” by obtaining information from family, long-standing friends, old work colleagues, etc., and assembling it into portfolios. These help to bring back old memories and form the basis of discussions to aid reminiscences.
