Meet The Manager

Simon Dixey is Home Manager at Darwin Court Care Centre.

Nestled within the picturesque Cathedral city of Lichfield, Darwin Court care home offers high-quality residential, respite and dementia care. With a friendly and companionable environment, and an expert care team who celebrate the lives of its residents. Couples and companions are warmly welcomed in our home where their well-being, comfort, and happiness are our top priority. Visit our Lichfield care home, meet the Home Manager and enjoy a cup of tea, or glass of something cold in one of our safe visiting rooms or secluded garden area.

Residential homes are not normally associated with penthouse suites, but Darwin is no ordinary care home. The top floor (Spires Suite) of Darwin Court Care Home is devoted to exclusive retirement living – beautifully furnished suites with a huge rooftop garden and views out across Lichfield city to the cathedral and the hills beyond. Something of a unique proposition.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

We are confident that our care homes are now some of the very safest places to live and work.

All of our staff have been trained in additional and heightened cleansing protocols and hygiene regimes, and these are being supported by a leading sanitisation system as part of our comprehensive infection controls. Testing regimes will continue for staff, residents and visitors.

We have re-aligned the resident in-house services to meet social distance guidance from the Government, for areas such as lounges and dining rooms, and for visiting entertainers and hair dressers; we are working hard to restore these services within the ‘new normal’ circumstances as soon as we can, when lockdown rules allow.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
safe-tick Sterilisation & Disinfection Devices We are using sterilisation and/or disinfection devices within our care setting.
safe-tick Virus Testing We are testing for viral infection when symptoms present within our care setting.

Avery Healthcare has invested in outdoor garden ‘visitor pods’

The pods, are a garden room specifically designed to facilitate safe face-to-face contact with relatives and visitors. Each pod contains a floor to ceiling partition screen and a hands-free intercom so that communication is clear and safe for use. They are fitted with internal electrics and two, low-surface temperature electric panel heaters – suitable for these winter months.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Activities Are So Important

Life cannot always be a bed of roses, whether you are living in your own home or you are in a home. But life at Darwin Court Care Centre is yours to live, and yes, we do have some beds of roses!

You can be involved as much or as little as you want. However, it is our philosophy that being active mentally and physically is good for the well-being. Walk into the lounges and you will be struck by the absence of TVs, and notice the chatter and activity that fills the room. No slumping here, then!  How you choose to spend your time is, of course entirely up to each person and many residents prefer to relax with a book or catch up with the papers in one of our quiet lounges.

Gardening plays quite a large part in the life of the home. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Fresh air and exercise are good for you.
  • You can work from a wheelchair.
  • You can eat the fruits of your labours.
  • Flowers brighten everything up.
  • You can have trips out to garden centres.
  • You can feel the soil in your hands and be connected to the earth.

We have mini-greenhouses on each floor as well as extensive outdoor gardens. There are many indoor activities too. We place an emphasis on reminiscing, learning life stories and providing stimulation, whether through the wonders of the internet, i-pads and Skyping, or by having a good one-to-one chat. Check out our Facebook pages to see what goes on and be kept informed.

We often get out of the home too and visit sites of local interest, whether it’s a trip to the theatre, a Sunday pub lunch, a group stroll or bird spotting around Stowe Pool.

There are regular visits from local community groups, both young and old, faith or interest based, as Darwin Court is now firmly embedded in the local Lichfield community.
