Meet The Manager

Kat Barnwell is Home Manager at Cairdean House.

I’m a registered mental health nurse, and I have worked my way up in almost every job role within a care home, starting as a Care Assistant and including working as part of the domestic, kitchen, admin and lifestyle teams.

As a Home Manager, it’s important to have energy, passion and a willingness to have difficult conversations to ensure that we are all striving to fulfil the lives of the people who choose to live at Cairdean House.

I love meeting and speaking to new people and learning about the residents and team members here. I enjoy hearing what is important to them and what makes people tick, as well as how we can make them smile.

Supporting and guiding my team and creating an environment where people want to be and feel proud to be part of the Cairdean family is one of my favourite parts of my role.

Kat Barnwell

Cairdean House is a modern, purpose-built care home in the beautiful village of Colinton, Edinburgh. The dedicated team offer specialist nursing, residential and dementia care within a home that has been designed with the needs of people living with dementia in mind.

Cairdean House has a homely feel, with lots of spaces where residents can relax and socialise, such as the coffee shop, cinema room and hair salon. There are various safe outdoor spaces for residents to enjoy, including a first-floor courtyard and large terraces, plus beautiful landscaped gardens that border woodland.

Residents are encouraged to play an active part in the home, from engaging in the daily goings-on to taking part in activities that they have always loved.

All Care UK homes now have purpose-built internal or external visiting suites available which enable visits to take place from behind a sealed glass panel, using a sound system to assist with communication. Where Government guidance and local health teams allow, these suites make it possible to continue visiting even when we have a case of Covid-19 in the home.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Wireless Internet access (WiFi)

Yes, our care home has WiFi in all our resident’s rooms.

Our Building and Facilities

Cairdean House was designed to the latest dementia standards by internationally renowned architect, Richard Pollock, and there’s a homely, welcoming atmosphere, with inviting spaces for relaxation.

Our Colinton care home has its own coffee shop, hair salon and cinema, and we’re always exploring new ways to make the home more luxurious for residents. We recently refreshed the outdoor terraces and the décor in the coffee shop, and created a more homely atmosphere in our reception area, with comfortable seating, a television and a fireplace.

The home is arranged into nine small suites, each with a shared lounge, dining area and new kitchenette. All shared spaces are frequently cleaned and there are hand gel and hand wash stations available throughout the home. We support residents to maintain their independence as much as possible, and, if they wish, they’re welcome to make their own drinks and snacks in the kitchenettes
