Elizabeth Cass is Home Manager at Colinton Care Home.
A real home has as much personality as the people who live there. That’s why we’ve made Colinton a place you’d be proud of and happy to live in – just as you would your own home.
Set in large, landscaped grounds, Colinton Care Home is a beautiful secluded retreat in the suburbs of Edinburgh. We are delighted to announce we recently completed a major programme of refurbishment and improvements, which have made a huge difference to life here.
We offer brighterkind care – a person-centred approach that is delivered through quality care, recreation and activities, and food and dining. Our warm and inviting residence provides the comforts of home with 24-hour support.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications |

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant. Our Building and Facilities |

Each floor has a small living room but we also have a main living room and summer house where we come together as a Group as well as a TV lounge, with a 50-inch plasma, for people to enjoy at their leisure. You can use these rooms to entertain your family and friends, spend time with other residents or take part in activities. If you’re looking for a bit of peace and tranquillity away from the company of others, we also have dedicated quiet spaces for you to enjoy. Our living rooms provide the ideal spaces to hold many of our activities – and it’s always up to you if you want to get involved. |

Description |
---|
Our recent refurbishment means all our bedrooms are looking their very best. Each room has coordinated carpets, curtains, bedspread, and a feature wallpaper wall that looks fantastic. Your bedroom furniture consists of: an appropriate bed suitable to your needs, double wardrobe, three-drawer chest, bedside table with lockable drawer, over-bed table, desk, desk chair and armchair. All our rooms are en-suite and there’s also a TV for enjoying your favourite programmes or watching a film in the privacy of your room. We understand that moving into Colinton can be a considerable transition, but one we try to make feel as easy as possible. Your room is your own personal space, which is why we encourage you to personalise your room if you like, by hanging your favourite pictures and decorating with ornaments and other personal possessions. We have a handyman on site who can get those little jobs done without any fuss. |

Activities Are So Important |
---|
A willingness to get involved and try new things is something we see time and again, once people are given the opportunity. We have a Recreation and Activities Team who oversees everything, but all our staff regularly brainstorm new ideas, too. And our residents vote on their suggestions, so we can be sure everyone’s looking forward to something, every day. Activities vary each week: from cinema club to armchair aerobics and live music. And everything’s flexible. If it’s sunny we try and get outside, so everyone can appreciate the best of the day. Technology has opened up the world for us here; keeping our residents connected and stimulated. From meeting a great-grandchild for the first time on Skype, to a live virtual tour of an art exhibition in Copenhagen, we make sure everyone gets exactly what they want from it – and it’s something we plan on using more and more. We’ve built excellent links to the community, allowing residents to continue their lives outside the home with ease. We regularly take trips to local shops, cafes and the Botanic Gardens. Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents. |
